YouTube and Vimeo Launch Support for HTML5

YouTube and Vimeo recently announced their support for HTML5 videos, i.e. videos that can be played directly in the browser, rather than within an Adobe's Flash player container. This is however still in beta test and has several limitations (e.g. works only with HTML5-compatible browsers Chrome/Safari).

Google Squared - Bing - Wolfram Alpha

It seems that this week is the week of new search (decision/computational knowledge) engines. After launching Bing and Wolfram Alpha just a few days ago, Google just released Google Squared as "an experimental search tool that collects facts from the web and presents them in an organized collection, similar to a spreadsheet". Google Squared and Wolfram Alpha are quite similar, as both try to "compute" answers in response to a user query. However, unlike Wolfram Alpha which uses an internal database, Google's database is the whole web. Will Google Squared be the Wolfram Alpha (and maybe also Bing) killer...

Google I/O: Google Web Elements and HTML5

At Google I/O, Google announed Google Web Elements, a set of widgets that allow users to quickly integrate some of Google’s most popular products (e.g. Calendar, Maps, News) directly into their sites with a minimal amount of effort. Above is a News element (widget), searching for news on Sports.

At the same event, Google VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra talked in his keynote about HTML 5. You can find more about this keynote and HTML 5 features here, with several links to tutorials from the Opera, Mozilla, Palm, and Google teams working on HTML 5. Interesting stuff!

Which Ajax framework should I use?

Matt Raible did a nice comparison of four popular Ajax frameworks, namely Dojo, Ext JS, GWT, and YUI, using different evaluation criteria. Here's his conclusion:

After working with the various frameworks, we believe that all the frameworks were very good and could be used to write applications with.

We're using GWT here and GWT-Ext here, and I highly recommend them for core Java developers.

GWT 1.6 is here!

Google released GWT 1.6 alongside with Google Plugin for Eclipse and Google App Engine for Java. We're using GWT in the PLEF and PLEM projects, and I highly recommend it for the development of your Web applications.

Google Friend Connect

Google Friend Connect is now available in beta. According to Google:

Friend Connect's goal is to facilitate an open social web. Using open standards like OpenID and OAuth, Friend Connect makes it simple for people to instantly interact with one another on the sites that they already love to visit. Additionally, websites that use Friend Connect become OpenSocial containers, capable of running applications created by the OpenSocial developer community.
